Police

Big Flats Police services are provided by the Chemung County Sheriff’s Department and the State Police. In an emergency, ALWAYS DIAL 911 and the appropriate department will be dispatched.

Fire

Big Flats Fire services are provided by several regional volunteer fire departments. In a fire emergency, ALWAYS DIAL 911 and the appropriate fire department will be dispatched.

Sanitation and Recycling

The Town of Big Flats does not offer any sanitation services. Sanitation is handled by local garbage haulers. Local providers are:

County Law requires residents to recycle.

The Chemung County Landfill is located in Lowman, New York, approximately 10 miles east of Big Flats on Interstate 86.

Zip Codes and Post Offices

The Town of Big Flats is serviced by six different Post Offices in surrounding towns with six different zip codes, causing great confusion to local businesses and residents who have a postal address for Elmira, Horseheads, or Corning, but are physically located in Big Flats. Residents and Businesses in Big Flats should confirm their postal address with the US Postal Service to prevent mail from being delayed.

The Town of Big Flats is looking for people interested in working as an Election Inspector for Town of Big Flats election sites. If you are interested in obtaining more information about becoming an inspector, please contact the Chemung County Board of Elections at (607) 737–5475 or the Town Clerk’s Office at (607) 562–8443 x201. All Election Inspectors are provided with compensation for training and days they work

Flood Information

The Chemung River and several creeks pose possible flood hazards to residents in the Town of Big Flats. While Big Flats residents shouldn’t fear flooding, they should always be prepared in case it should happen.

• Visit www.chemungriverfriends.org and become familiar with the Chemung River.
• Pick up flooding pamphlets in Town Hall.
• Talk to the Building and Planning Department.
• Consult your homeowner’s insurance agent.
