Teresa Dean, a resident of Big Flats for 40+ years is starting her elected term as the Town Supervisor. As a past Town Clerk, Deputy Town Clerk and Transcribing Typist to the Planning, Building, Code and Drainage departments, Teresa is deeply invested in the interests of the town.

Teresa acknowledges that the biggest problem facing Big Flats is balancing equalization rate and assessment. She is concerned with the annual trending that has been happening in the Town. Business growth while maintaining the rural atmosphere and the recently vacant commercial structures is also a concern. With financial cuts in state and county budgets and the effects it will have on the rural areas means that we have to be aware of frivolous spending.

Currently, Teresa is the owner of a local fitness center. In the past she has served as the Vice President, President and even Secretary of Chemung / Schuyler Municipal Clerks’ Association; Directory Director for the New York State Town Clerk’s Association; member of the Big Flats Youth Commission; and Big Flats Task Force that was instrumental in providing research and information for the Community Center. Teresa was the chairman of Parade Committee and member of the Big Flats Community Days, member and Elder of the Big Flats Presbyterian Church. She and her husband, Chris, have two sons, Brian and Tyler.

Each month I’ll use this column to provide some insight into what’s going on in the Town of Big Flats. I’ll use this space to address new projects, citizen’s concerns, most frequently asked questions, and other issues related to town business.
